She went above and beyond as an instructor every single day. I took an accelerated course over the summer and it lasted just shy of two months. It's an adult education course and you'll only do well if you put in the work and effort. Karen made the lectures engaging and interesting for the students and all the instructors we had for our practicals were incredibly helpful in guiding us through steps for skills stations. Karen pushed us incredibly hard but only because she wanted us to succeed!! It's our responsibility as students to use that momentum to push ourselves to do better. When I'm out in the field, I know I'm going to hear Karen's voice in my head and that's going to make me be a better EMT when I'm trying to save a life! As a student we do a 911 rotation and ride along in an ambulance for a whole shift. There's no more real world experience than that! It gives you a first hand view of what it is to be an EMT and as a student we were also allowed to assist with patients when it came to skills we've already mastered in class. It was nerve wracking but also exhilarating! I see people saying the course is really difficult and people fail out or don't make it to the final but I highly encourage anyone taking this course to remember you're an adult and you're responsible for how you do. All the material and information is given to you but you have to do the work, that means read along with the textbook and complete all the homework on time Karen more than prepared us for the NYS exam because she wants us to not only pass the exam but be great EMTs when we're out on the field. That's how you know she's a great instructor, she genuinely cares. I would recommend this with a few key points. When I took this I passed the practicals easily. If you study and listen you will do fine. That said some of the instructors were regularly late to class and one day there was a younger girl sleeping while WAITING for the instructors to show up. When they finally did a younger boy instructor yelled “WAKE UP” at her. Lost all my respect that day. Treat people with decency you’re not a navy seal drill instructor so check the ego friendo.
